Going Deep into Ocean Memory

How might the concept of memory inspire us to think differently about the systems of the deep sea?

Akin collaborated with top artists and scientists to reframe the deep sea through the lens of memory. Our team guided this trans-disciplinary 20 person team through a multi-day in- field session at Friday Harbor Labs in the San Juan Islands.

We worked with the National Keck Foundation and the Deep Sea Ocean Memory Project with its first trans-disciplinary exploration. This initiative spurred innovative science and art projects that help us understand and communicate how changes in our global environment are recorded by the deep ocean and its inhabitants.

From lightening talks to the in-field examination of the ocean floor, the team explored the concept of ocean memory in relation to other ecosystems and organisms to create the foundation for our own hypotheses. This program gave shape to inspiring thought leadership and physical prototypes that ranged from operas to underwater museums while building a community of practice that continues the collaboration into the future.
